Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — The FBI’s San Juan Division is seeking to identify potential victims of a man accused of video voyeurism and attempted possession of child exploitation items for allegedly installing a hidden camera in a public bathroom aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
The camera was allegedly installed on the cruise line’s Harmony of the Seas during a seven-day cruise that departed from Miami, Florida, in late April, according to the criminal complaint filed in the case.
The complaint says the man, named Jeremy Froyas, boarded Harmony of the Seas in Miami. While the cruise ship was sailing in international waters, he allegedly placed a hidden Wi-Fi camera in a public bathroom on the ship’s upper deck, between a surf simulator and a barrier.
Several days later, another passenger noticed the hidden camera and notified the Harmony crew. The security men searched the bathroom and found and confiscated the hidden camera. The criminal complaint stated that the security personnel found a Micro SD card containing several hours of video files.
And the FBI has posted an online form for information regarding a potential victim. “If you and/or the guardian of a minor have been a victim of Jeremy Froyas or have information relevant to this investigation, please fill out this short form,” the post reads. The time frame is set between April 30 and May 1, 2023.
The initial on-camera videos allegedly depict Froyas hiding the camera, adjusting the angle to focus on the toilet, then connecting the camera to his phone using Wi-Fi, before leaving the bathroom.
The complaint said that additional videos reviewed by investigators showed more than 150 people, including regarding 40 minors at the minimum, entering the bathroom to either use the toilet, put on or take off their swimwear.
The criminal complaint alleges that Froyas “admitted to placing the hidden camera in the bathroom” and told the ship’s security personnel that he knew the camera had been discovered and taken because he might not find it when he went to check on it on May 1.
At Monday’s hearing, Froyas was released and turned over to his wife as a third-party guardian, and ordered to post a $25,000 unsecured bond with conditions: no contact with a minor without him being monitored, including his children, and no internet access. . He is also scheduled to surrender his passport, among other things, court records show.
“Mr. Froyas has not been formally charged. Therefore, I have nothing to say at this time,” his lawyer, Leo Aldridge, told CNN.
Royal Caribbean said in a statement that it is aware of the incident that occurred on board the cruise ship on April 29.
The statement added, “The matter was reported to local and federal law enforcement authorities immediately, and the authorities removed the passenger in question from the ship for further investigation. As this is a case they are now investigating, we cannot share any further details at this time.”
