The United States has been good to Taiwan in recent years, only getting 4%, which should be related to the fact that some Taiwanese media often demonize the United States. For example, such absurd remarks as “this time Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is actually a conspiracy of an American arms dealer” may have left a bad impression on the Taiwanese people on the United States.
Akio Yaita pointed out that when asked “the country or region that Taiwan should be most close to in the future,” Japan ranked first with 46%, the United States with 24%, and China with 15%. Yaita said that three years ago, the answer to the same question was “Japan first, China second, and the United States third”. The biggest reason for the reversal of the positions of China and the United States is: after China’s implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong, and the recent frequent co-located rounds. Taiwan has caused the Taiwanese people to resent China, and at the same time realize the importance of Taiwan-US relations.
Akio Yaita continued to point out that when the poll asked “the country or region with the most influence on Taiwan”, 58% of the respondents answered “the United States”, 25% answered “China”, and only 13% answered “Japan”. This means that “Taiwanese people still view foreign relations fairly rationally.” Although Taiwan and Japan are good friends, Japan’s pacifist constitution, such as a future conflict in the Taiwan Strait, is not much that Japan can do.
Akio Yaita said that as a Japanese media person, he is very grateful to the Taiwanese people for their friendship with Japan, and also realizes that as a regional power, Japan is far from fulfilling its due responsibilities and obligations. In the future, he will continue to make remarks in the Japanese media, promote the development of Japan-Taiwan relations, and urge Japan to amend the constitution, so as to assume more responsibilities for peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
