And she added: «What distinguishes me in my musical career is that I work on myself from the technical and administrative sides. in the UAE, especially in the music field.
Indescribable love
And regarding the Dubai Opera, which I recently performed at the National Youth Orchestra, Fatima said: “I love theaters in general, and I prefer appearing on them and singing more than presenting myself and my work to the media. Singing is my first language of communication, and my love for theaters is indescribable.”
She explained that what distinguishes operatic singing from the rest of the genres is that it “requires the use of the entire body and not just the voice, just as it does not need a microphone, in addition to that the songs are not only words and melody, but rather a story that requires the artist to present it with his voice through the correct performance, so It can be said that it is a sung play, and whoever sings the opera must be proficient in acting and singing at the same time.
She emphasized that she tends to opera and classical music, but what she is trying to do is to combine East and West. The songs she produced with Berkley Abu Dhabi included two songs in classical Arabic, and they include the rhythm of the “waltz” and contain Western instruments mixed with oriental rhythms.
Regarding her relationship with languages, especially since opera is presented in many of them, including Russian, French and Italian, Fatima said that she loves languages, and sings in French a great deal, but Italian is the closest to her, and she also praised many languages, including Korean, Czech, Polish and Russian, as she enjoys learning the pronunciation of languages and the meanings of words, as she put it.
Carmen character
As for the Emirati abaya, which is not absent from Fatima’s looks on the stage, the opera singer indicated that she seeks to highlight identity through the Emirati dress, stressing that she sends a message through that that no matter how different the field of work is, it is possible for a person to do his work while preserving on his identity.
She added that she had cooperated with the Emirati designer, Maryam Amira, in her last appearance at the Dubai Opera, and sat with her and studied the character of Carmen, the heroine of the play, who chose to perform one of her songs, following which the details of the abaya were chosen, to combine the traditional and contemporary forms.
Musicians Association
Fatima expressed her happiness at obtaining a scholarship from the Department of Tourism and Culture – Abu Dhabi from the University of Berkeley, through which she will prepare for her second master’s degree, and it will be in music business management, pointing out that this field is useful in her future career, as musicians in the Emirates work in a manner Solo, so you will help, through study and employment, to develop strategies for this field, in order to facilitate future musicians, for example in the field of licensing and song production, which is part of the preservation of intellectual property rights. And she stressed that “artistic talent must be complemented by science. Excellence in any field must combine talent and knowledge.”
She praised the move to launch the Musicians Association in the Emirates, in which she is present as a founding member, noting that associations in other fields of culture were present in the country, except for musicians, which was finally achieved and gave musicians hope.
And she considered that the most important thing that the association will offer is “providing opportunities for bands in the UAE to participate in events, which often seek the help of international artists, due to the lack of knowledge that there are many musicians in our country. For example, there is an Emirati female flutist who studied in Britain and not many know regarding her.” Therefore, the association will help all of them appear to the public in the Emirates.
Support for new talent
Fatima Al-Hashemi studied engineering, but she did not work in this field, as she went to the music field, and she carries a message that she seeks to convey through her voice. Today, she is working on a master’s degree in the field of artistic business management, and seeks to invest this science in music to support new talents through the Musicians Association to which she belongs. She studied the accordion at school, then moved on to the piano. She expressed her love for opera singer Maria Clas, not only for her distinction, but also for her insistence on singing despite the criticism she was subjected to.
