Partying into the wee hours, struggling to keep in shape and a collaboration with Austrian right-wing extremist Sickl – Martin Hinteregger has caused irritation throughout his pro career. As a result, he fell out of favor with his former club Eintracht Frankfurt and ended his career in June. At least at the professional level.
Because the 29-year-old can’t do without the round leather. On Friday he made his debut in his native Austria with the fifth division club SGA Sirnitz. 1500 fans traveled to the away game in St. Veit to see their “Hinti” play. And despite the 3-0 defeat, he was satisfied following the game. “It was just a mega pass!” Hinteregger said to the “Krone”. But he knows he still has room for improvement. «I still need time because I lived like a pensioner for three months and only trained twice. If I’m fully fit once more, the goals will come.”

As his father Franz tells the newspaper, the amateur debut wasn’t just fun. On the contrary. Disillusionment followed the day following. “Austria’s media celebrated Martin – but in Germany he was once more put in the right-wing extremist light, labeled as a problem boy,” says Papa Hinteregger. «Martin read the news in the morning and cried. The whole family is ready.” He goes even further and sounds the alarm. “When will the media rush stop? Didn’t you learn anything from the Robert Enke case?”
Former German international goalkeeper Enke, who committed suicide in November 2009, suffered from depression. The enormous pressure to perform was partly responsible for this.
Hinteregger also had to struggle with this. Because half a year before his resignation, he had already thought regarding it. And felt how beautiful life can be when there is no pressure. When he announced his resignation, he said: “With this decision, a lot of ballast fell from me.” And yet there is still a pack left. One can only hope for him that he doesn’t have to carry this around with him for too long. (bir)
