Fatal Truck Collision on A66 Near Fulda: Farmers’ Protest Causes Backlog

A truck driver died in a rear-end collision on the A66 near Fulda. There was a backlog on the highway because of a tractor ride by demonstrating farmers.

At around 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, a truck drove into the end of a traffic jam on the A66 between the Flieden and Neuhof-Süd (Fulda) junctions heading north, the police said. Due to the force of the impact, a total of three trucks were pushed onto each other.

According to police, the driver of the third car died from his injuries in the accident. The driver of the middle truck was trapped in the vehicle. It is currently not possible to say anything about the severity of the injuries.

Because the first truck that hit the end of the traffic jam was loading heating oil, several thousand liters of oil leaked out in the accident. The emergency services on site tried to stop the spread of the liquid.

Backlog after farmers’ protests

When asked, a police spokesman confirmed that it was a backlog on the A66 caused by the farmers’ protests. The A66 had previously been completely closed for tractors to drive.

It is still unclear why the truck driver drove towards the end of the traffic jam. An expert should determine how exactly the accident could have occurred.

A66 closed for rescue work

According to the police, emergency services, fire brigade and police as well as a rescue helicopter were still in action on Wednesday afternoon.

The A66 remains completely closed between the Schlüchtern-Nord and Neuhof-Süd junctions for rescue work in the north direction. The police ask that you avoid the scene of the accident as far as possible.
