2023-06-09 08:07:00

A Russian in his twenties was fatally attacked on Thursday June 8, 2023 by a shark. The drama played out off a beach in the city of Hurghada, on the shores of the Red Sea.

Extremely rare. While fatal shark attacks cause “only” a handful of deaths worldwide each year, a young Russian, in his twenties, was killed on Thursday June 8 by a shark off the coast of the Egyptian city of Hurghada on the Red Sea, authorities said.

“The attack of a shark on a man (…) resulted in his death,” the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment said on Facebook, without providing further details. Russian media said the victim was a Russian in his twenties. On the side of the Russian authorities, the consul general Viktor Voropayev declared that “the victim was not a tourist but a permanent resident in Egypt”.

Precedents in the Red Sea

On several videos broadcast since Thursday on social networks and presented as showing the incident filmed from the beach, a person seems to be struggling to escape this terrible shark attack. Be careful, if you decide to view these images, they may shock some people.

From the side of the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment, it was later explained that the animal, a tiger shark, had been captured and that its examination had revealed “abnormal behavior (…) which had caused the incident “. And to specify that swimming and water games in the area would be suspended for two days from this Friday.

While the Red Sea is an important tourist destination in Egypt, sharks are not uncommon there but infrequently attack swimmers, if they do not exceed the authorized limits… All the same, as recalled Le Figaro, in July 2022, two tourists, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed by a shark near Hurghada. In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off an Egyptian beach in the Red Sea, as were a German in 2015 and a German woman in 2010.
