At around 7:12 a.m. on August 13, 2023, at the Sakaemachi intersection on National Route 8 in Sakaemachi 2, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, an ordinary passenger car and a large motorcycle collided. It was announced that the man who was unconscious and in critical condition on board had been identified as Nobuhisa Kanemoto, 40, an employee of a privately owned store in Shinmachi, the same city. Kanemoto was confirmed dead at the hospital to which he was transported at 8:42 am on the same day. The cause of death was spinal cord injury.

Kanemoto is believed to have collided with a car turning right when he was heading straight for Kashiwazaki on Route 8. Hiromi Katayama, 33, a company employee from Shimogenyu, the city, who was driving the car, was not injured.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
