In Italy, a 38-year-old man died of malaria on December 31, 2022 following returning from a stay in Cameroon.
He had completed a professional stay in Cameroon for an unspecified duration from which he returned on December 13, 2024. On December 25 he presented with a fever, cough and feeling unwell. A sample to test for SARS-CoV-2 infection was taken and was negative. The patient treated himself with paracetamol and ibuprofen. On December 26 he saw a doctor, who said it was the flu and added an antibiotic to the medication he was already taking. Over the next few days, the fever continued and a second doctor recommended continued treatment. On December 30, the patient suffered an epileptic seizure and was hospitalized in intensive care in a comatose state.
The opinion of an infectious disease specialist was requested. During the questioning of the patient’s parents, they clarified who the patient’s employer was. It was on this occasion that the practitioner made the link with a case of malaria recently treated in his department and concerning a 50-year-old man employed by the same company. It was only then that the malaria diagnostic test was performed. The patient died the next day, probably from a pernicious attack of malaria.
The patient had not benefited from anti-malaria prophylaxis.
