The custody of the alleged perpetrator of the fatal knife attack near the Eiffel Tower in Paris continues this Monday, a radicalized suspect whose mother had reported his potential danger at the end of October. Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, a 26-year-old Franco-Iranian, was arrested following the attack which caused the death of a young German-Filipino tourist and injured two other people, Saturday around 9:30 p.m. near the Bir-Hakeim bridge .
A flagrant investigation was opened for “assassination and attempted assassination in connection with a terrorist enterprise” and “association of terrorist criminals with a view to preparing crimes once morest people”.
According to the first elements of the investigation, the suspect’s mother had indicated to the police in October that she was worried regarding her son – listed for Islamist radicalization (FSPRT) according to a source close to the investigation -, seeing that he “withdrew into himself,” said the anti-terrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, on Sunday.
The police then tried to have him examined by a doctor and hospitalized, something ultimately impossible in the absence of problems, according to a source close to the case. His mother, moreover, did not want to request his forced hospitalization. A few days following his report, she assured that he was “doing better”, once more according to the same source.
“Support for jihadists”
In police custody like three members of his family or entourage, the suspect “speaks out”, according to a source close to the case. Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab provided “his support for jihadists acting in different areas” by means of a video published in particular on his X account which “included numerous publications on Hamas, Gaza and more generally Palestine”, declared Mr. Ricard.

The 23-year-old German-Filipino tourist killed with a knife received “two hammer blows and four stab wounds” and the assailant shouted “Allah akbar” several times, declaring that he was “equipped with an explosive belt”, said Mr. Ricard. He also attacked, with a hammer, two sixty-year-olds, one French, the other British, who were slightly injured, before being subdued by the police.
“Very unstable profile”
“Coming from a family without any religious commitment”, Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab converted to Islam at 18 and “very quickly” fell into “jihadist ideology”. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison for criminal conspiracy to prepare an act of terrorism, following a planned violent action at Defense, in 2016. He was released from prison in March 2020.
