A festival was held in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan on the 3rd, but one of the festival’s floats (similar to a giant float) overturned on the road, causing at least 18 injuries and one death. According to the police and other sources, the scene of the accident was a gentle downhill slope. According to Japan’s “Kyodo News” report, the incident took place near Hirose Shrine in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. At around 8:45 a.m. Japan time, a festival float overturned. Izu Central Police and firefighters pointed out that the accident resulted in the death of a man in his 70s and 18 injuries. One of the injured was a junior. Elementary school students. The call they received stated that “the 3-meter-high roller coaster overturned, some people fell down, and some were injured.”
Hirose Shrine stated that a festival was being held at the shrine today. Two floats departed from the nearby public hall at 8:30 in the morning, preparing to go to the shrine. One of them accidentally overturned. Since the accident scene was on a gentle downhill slope, the police speculated that the accident may have occurred because the roller coaster was unable to stop in time. This festival is said to be held for the first time in four years following the COVID-19 epidemic. There are several people on top of the festival’s float, and other festival participants pull the float with ropes.
