The gendarme who fired the shots was taken into custody “as the procedure provides”, said Béthune prosecutor Thierry Dran in a press release.
The gendarmes, called for “an individual threatening his neighbor” showed up shortly before 11 a.m. at the home of this 66-year-old man.
“The first elements of the investigation suggest that the man immediately threatened the gendarmes with a sword,” said the prosecutor.
“They allegedly tried to calm him down before using, in vain, the taser, then the defense stick. As they fell back, the man allegedly continued to charge them. One of the soldiers then allegedly fire twice,” he said.
The individual died of his injuries.
In the followingnoon, in this town near Béthune, two gendarmerie cars completely blocked access to the area, a street lined with identical red brick houses.
Two investigations were opened in flagrante, said the prosecution.
The first for attempted murder of persons holding public authority and threats to neighbours, was entrusted to the Research Section of the Lille gendarmerie.
The other, for willful violence resulting in death without the intention of giving it, was entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Gendarmerie.
