The serious accident which occurred Monday morning on the Brussels inner ring road near Zaventem left a second person dead, the Hal-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office reported on Monday. A second passenger in the car involved in the collision with a truck died from his injuries.
The accident occurred on Monday around 4:15 a.m. just following exit 3 towards Brussels-National airport. According to the driver of the truck, the car had taken the exit ramp before the motorist reversed his decision and suddenly decided to return to the ring.
“The driver anticipated by changing lanes to leave room for the car, but the driver of the latter tried to turn right just before the truck. The driver of the truck was then unable to avoid the other vehicle,” explained the spokesperson for the Hal-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office, Sabine Lievens.
The driver underwent a breathalyzer test and a saliva test which came back negative. Police say his statements are consistent with how the vehicles were found at the crash scene. It is for this reason that the prosecution did not appoint a traffic expert.
“In the car, there were three men,” said Sabine Lievens. The passenger in the back seat, a 39-year-old man with no known address in Belgium, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He landed on the central berm and died instantly. The driver, aged 57 and from Evere, and the second passenger had to be extricated by firefighters.
The second passenger died Monday followingnoon, added the prosecution.
