A 76-year-old Belgian tourist died Thursday following being attacked by an animal off a beach in southern Mexico, report the AP news agency and several media outlets. Investigations are still underway to find out whether the man was bitten by a shark or a crocodile.
The attack occurred Thursday morning (local time) at a resort town in Mexico’s Pacific Ocean state of Guerrero. According to emergency services, the 76-year-old man was bitten on the legs. He was staying with his wife in a holiday resort near the beach. A woman was also bitten and seriously injured. The beach has been temporarily closed.
As far as the Belgian tourist is concerned, “experts believe it was likely attacked by a crocodile, as the water temperature is not suitable for sharks“, Guerrero state tourism secretary Santos Ramírez told a local newspaper. After the accident, the navy also did not detect a shark“. Mr. Ramírez also confirmed that the deceased man was of Belgian nationality. The Federal Foreign Office was not immediately able to confirm the death.
Earlier this month, another woman was killed by a shark in a more northern region of Mexico.
