fast composite 3D printer for volume production

Imposible Objects announces the new CBAM 25 3D printer as a step up from Moore’s Law, but for 3D printing. The machine prints fifteen times faster than the fastest competitor. And that with high performance composite.

The CBAM 25 will be launched at Rapid+TCT in Chicago next week. Robert Schwartz, founder and CEO of Impossible Objects, describes the new 3D printer as the step towards a new era. “We are entering a new era of 3D printing with almost unlimited material options at the speed of true mass production. This is a Moore’s law moment for 3D printing, and this is just the first step.”

Large number of applications

The CBAM 25 is suitable for a large number of high-quality composite materials. Among them is Carbon Fiber PEEK, a material with very high chemical and temperature resistance, and mechanical properties superior to most engineering plastics. Carbon Fiber PEEK parts are a suitable alternative to aluminum, tooling, spare parts, repairs and end use parts.

Multiple steps in printing process

The CBAM technology from Impossible Objects has been specially developed for 3D printing with composite. The process starts with applying a binder ink to a plate of reinforcement material. Thermoplastic powder is applied to this at those places where material is needed in the product. That is repeated every layer. In the final steps, these plates are compressed and sintered, following which the excess material is removed. Despite these multiple process steps, the new CBAM 25 printer is much faster than conventional 3D printers for these high performance materials.

With this, 3D printing is moving to volume manufacturing

Runner and Formula racing car

To illustrate the difference in speed Steve Hoover, CEO, makes the comparison between the fastest runner at 1 mile and a Formula racing car. “That’s the same difference our new CBAM 25 has compared to previous technologies. We believe this is a huge step forward not only for our company, but also for our industry as 3D printing moves into volume manufacturing.”
