Fashion Through the Decades: Exploring Style Highlights in the LEADER Region Traunviertler Alpenvorland

REGION KIRCHDORF/STEYR. The third and final part of the “Year In The Past” series is style-conscious: together with historian Siegfried Kristöfl, the topothecars of the LEADER region Traunviertler Alpenvorland searched for the big, well-known as well as small, personal fashion highlights of the past decades.

“A topotheque shows what has changed over the decades and what has literally gone out of fashion. What has improved and what we can do without. What we were happy about and what somehow sticks in our memories,” says Siegfried Kristöfl, historian and head of the LEADER region’s topotheque project. Clothing is the best way to experience these feelings while flipping through photos.

Children’s fashion in the 1970s: flashy, colourful, often self-knitted

The boomer generation immediately remembers the children’s clothing of the 1970s, in which they themselves grew up. Laughter and shock rise up at the same time: strong colours, large patterns, cheaply bought items, items inherited from siblings, plus self-knitted and practical new items. The recording from 1977 is one of the favorite pieces of topothecarin Anita Zaunmayr. In addition to the emotional reaction upon recognition, there is immediately the conviction that they were better dressed than the students of the post-war generation. The photo shows an all-boy class in the state contract year 1955 in Sierninghofen.

Tailor at work

Pictures from Ternberg and Schlierbach show that there were still tailors in every community at that time. In Schlierbach, tailor Johann Sterneder and master tailor Theresia Forstinger even had their picture taken at their sewing machines.

Summer walk with blazer and pencil skirt

“If we want to see fashionable people, the best thing to do is go into the Bad Hall Topothek and visit the Kurpark in the 1950s and 1960s,” says Kristöfl. Families, not just spa guests, also stroll through the complex on Sundays, looking forward to an ice cream and, above all, to the lightness that is in the air. The topothecarin Elisabeth Weber also nostalgically enjoys this company and is happy to add personal photographs of the time from private albums to the collection.

Elegante Goldhaubenfrauen

“In our country, women with gold hoods can be particularly proud of their clothes. And there are particularly beautiful shots from July 1961 of a first class in Schlierbach. The warm, reddish tone of the photos underscores the noble costume and the elegance of the women,” says Kristöfl.

Music club in new costumes

And many bands felt at least as well dressed when they marched in their new traditional costumes for the first time and not only impressed their followers musically. Or – as in the photo – a group was on a kind of tour. The music club from Adlwang traveled to Canada in 1977 and represented Upper Austrian folk culture with both their uniforms and their sound.

Delve into the past with the help of topotheques

Looking for the right thing in topotheques is sometimes easier than finding the right thing in fashion shops and boutiques. Keywords help enormously. Entered in the search field, everything is available at a glance with a short click. The digital image archives are publicly accessible: www.topothek.at
