English fashion rebel Vivienne Westwood has died. In a statement on Twitter, her fashion house said she died “peacefully and surrounded” by her family in Clapham, south London.
Westwood rose to fame on the fashion scene in the 1970s with her androgynous designs, slogan tees and irreverent attitude towards the establishment. She is considered a pioneer of punk in the fashion industry. She ran a boutique on London’s King’s Road with Malcolm McLaren, manager of the punk band Sex Pistols.
She then built a global fashion brand that now has stores in the UK, France, Italy, USA and Asia. Crazy outfits were her trademark for a long time. She was considered a staunch activist and brought issues close to her heart, such as climate change, onto the catwalk. In 2006, Westwood was made a lady for her services to the fashion world.
