A group of fans iPod launched, through the Discord platformlaunched an ambitious project to preserve the classic games of the original model, which were removed from the App Store in 2011.
O iPod Click Wheel Games Archive aims to save the original 54 games created for the device, before they are lost forever.
This was made possible by a loophole in Apple’s digital rights management (DRM) protection, which allowed games to be manually backed up to a second copy of iTunes. This made it possible to create a community virtual machine, which allows synchronizing authorized games on iPods.
The project has already obtained 42 of the original 54 gamesincluding titles like Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokémon and Ms. Pac-Man. Apple still allows users to authorize existing games on their iPods, which is fundamental to the project.
However, the project faces the risk of being stalled if Apple shuts down the server that handles this authorization. Additionally, games cannot be redownloaded from the App Store, making user backups the only way to preserve them.
The project’s founders called on owners of Click Wheel iPods to contribute their games to the project. Those wishing to help should get in touch from Discord.

**[Your Name]**: Thank you for joining us today, Olsro! Can you start by telling us about the inspiration behind the iPod Click-Wheel Game Preservation Project?
**Olsro**: Absolutely! The iPod was such an iconic device, especially with its click-wheel games. As the years go by, many of these games are at risk of being lost forever. We wanted to create a community-driven initiative to rescue those games and ensure they remain accessible for fans and new audiences alike.
**[Your Name]**: That’s a great initiative! What types of games are you focusing on, and do you have any particular favorites yourself?
**Olsro**: We’re focusing on all the classic games that were available on the iPod, like *Texas Hold’em*, *Brick*, and *Solitaire*. Personally, I have a soft spot for *Minesweeper*! Each game has its own unique charm, so we’re encouraging anyone with old games to reach out.
**[Your Name]**: Speaking of reach, how can interested individuals contribute to your project?

**[Your Name]**: That sounds wonderful! What do you envision for the future of this project?
**Olsro**: We hope to eventually create a comprehensive online archive where people can play and share these games. Our goal is to foster a community that keeps these classics alive for future generations to enjoy.
