According to the Flemish daily, she would have been called a “bitch” and a “whore” by the troublemakers. The situation then escalated when she was defended by her companion.

In total, around forty young people have managed to illegally enter the area despite the presence of a new fence at 600,000 euros around the site since May 20. The Recreation Estate Manager, Operator Farys, will review the outlet and fence surrounding the site’s pond.

An open investigation

The Ghent police have also opened an investigation. Farys and the police consulted to assess the situation. It emerged that some weak points of the fence need to be strengthened. The operator plans to create some sort of trap at the current exit, to prevent tricking the access system. This proposal would make it impossible to swim in or out, adds Farys.

In addition to the fence, a new identification system has been in place since this year. All visitors must register and identify themselves. Non-Ghent residents must pay between 1 and 5 euros to be able to access the bathing area. These rules were put in place by the municipal council of Ghent following numerous fights on the site last summer.

Some 8,000 visitors, mainly from Ghent, have been counted since the implementation of this system. Last weekend, the large crowd was present with 5,000 visitors counted.

In all, 84 people were expelled from the estate following the implementation of this new security system, most often following climbing the fence or following an altercation.
