New Delhi: Farmers’ leader Rakesh Tikayat said that a final decision regarding the strike of wrestlers will be taken at a meeting in Haryana on Friday. Addressing the people of Khap Panchayat in Muzaffar Nagar, Tikayat said that he would meet the President if necessary and not to worry.
Earlier, wrestlers had reached Haridwar to throw their medals in the Ganges as part of the protest. However, farmer leaders intervened and dissuaded the wrestlers from this. The players backed out of the decision to award the medal to the government by giving five days to resolve the issue. Khap Panchayat was joined following this.
“They were told that there is no need to wash the medals in the Ganges, put them up for auction. Let the whole world come forward to stop the auction. If necessary, he will go and see the President. We are all with you, don’t worry’, Tikayat said. He added that it is good that the family is expanding in this way and the wrestlers will fight till they get justice.
“You have to understand what the central government is doing. Lalu’s family was destroyed in Bihar. What they did to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family. A similar thing is happening in Rajasthan too,’ he said at the meeting.
The wrestlers’ strike has become a political issue in Haryana and western UP. The issue has also opened up a rift within the BJP. BJP from Haryana Lok Sabha member Brijendra Singh came forward in support of the strike. He said that the decision to donate the medals to Ganga was painful.
