A new case of kidnapping has been reported in the municipality of Ituango, Antioquia, where armed men intercepted and deprived Mr. Ramón Zapata, a 60-year-old farmer, of his freedom.

According to initial reports, Mr. Ramón was approached by two armed men as he was heading to his farm in a rural area of the municipality. The criminals intimidated him and kidnapped him in an unknown direction.

Authorities are currently conducting the corresponding investigations to clarify the events and determine which criminal group is behind the kidnapping. Organisations such as the Clan del Golfo and dissidents of the FARC are active in the region, however, another kidnapping had already been reported this year, apparently perpetrated by common criminals.

In February of this year, Juan José Tobón Úsuga, an 18-year-old, was kidnapped while riding a motorcycle. His captors burned the motorcycle and killed him. His body was found nine days later. Juan José’s family had to move due to constant intimidation following the crime and they are still demanding justice for his death.

So far in 2024, there have been six cases of kidnapping with seven victims in Antioquia. Juan José Tobón Úsuga is the only fatal victim, while the other six people have managed to regain their freedom. In addition, nine people have been arrested for the crime of kidnapping so far this year.

Authorities are asking the community to refrain from any contact with the kidnappers and to provide any information that might help in the release of Mr. Ramón Zapata and the capture of those responsible.
