Farid Makari passes away

The death of the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Farid Nabil Makari, passed away following a struggle with illness.

Makari was born in Anfeh – Koura in northern Lebanon in 1947. He studied civil engineering at the University of Texas in Austin (USA) and obtained a BA in this field. He joined the Saudi “Oger” and “Oger” international companies, which were founded by the martyr Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

Makari entered the political fray for the first time through the parliamentary elections. He contested them in 1992 and won the Orthodox parliamentary seat for Koura.

He was re-elected for the same seat in the 1996, 2000 and 2005 elections.

Between 1995 and 1996, Makari served as Minister of Information in the government headed by Prime Minister Hariri. Parliamentary committees in which he participated: the Public Works, Transport, Energy and Water Committee, the Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Committee, the Environment Committee and the Displaced Affairs Committee. He was known for his follow-up of development projects in the North Governorate, especially the districts of Koura and Batroun. After the martyrdom of Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, Farid Makari was one of the prominent faces in the “Cedar Revolution”. He won the parliamentary elections in 2005 on the list of the March 14 Forces Alliance.

Since 2005, Makari has been elected deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.
