Farewell and new beginning – Rattle conducts Mahler | SUN | 16 10 2022 | 11:03

Last November, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra hosted a memorable concert evening in the Isarphilharmonie in Munich under its designated chief conductor. Sir Simon Rattle, who will be in charge of the artistic fortunes of the renowned radio orchestra as sixth chief conductor from the 2023/24 season, conducted Gustav Mahler’s last completed work: the Ninth Symphony, composed in 1909-10. The evening was dedicated to the memory of the Dutch conductor Bernard Haitnik, who had died a few weeks previously and who had close ties to the BRSO for many decades – also, but not only, as a Mahler conductor. With Mahler’s last symphony, which is characterized by the theme of farewell and death, the orchestra symbolically bid farewell to the maestro, who was as great as he was humble.
