The choreographer, director and performer will take up her post on January 1, 2024, succeeding Catherine Marnas.
The announcement was made by Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak on Monday, July 3. Fanny de Chaillé, 49, will head the National Theater of Bordeaux in Aquitaine (TnBA). The appointment of the director, choreographer and performer was made in agreement with Alain Rousset, President of the Region and Pierre Hurmic, Mayor of Bordeaux, supervisory authorities of the national scene.
In the home stretch, Fanny de Chaillé was part of a tight selection with Carole Thibaut, director, actress and current director of the national drama center of Montluçon; Dorcy Rugamba, Rwandan director, actor and playwright; and Sébastien Bournac, a theater man from Lot-et-Garonne. The four candidates had to present a project to take over from Catherine Marnas, who has led the TnBA since January 2014. The latter, who completed the programming for the 2023-2024 season before giving up her place on January 1, will continue her career in company in the Marseille region.
Creations
Artist associated with Espace-Malraux until 2002, national scene of Chambéry and Savoy, Fanny de Chaillé was trained in Aesthetics at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1996 to 2001, she worked with the dancer and choreographer Daniel Larrieu at the National Choreographic Center of Tours, first as an assistant director for the plays We were so quiet, +Than yesterday et Felt, a piece for which she composed the music with Rubin Steiner. She will then perform for the play ashes.
She has been creating her own pieces and performances since 1995, including: karaokurt (1996), karaoke made from the work of Kurt Schwitters, the Ursonate ; The Chat Stone (1997), installation-performance ; Robert (2000), performance for a dancer and a dictionary or even The Winter Journey (2001), performance reading from an eponymous text by Georges Perec.
Alongside actor Grégoire Monsaingeon, Fanny de Chaillé founded the group Les Velourses. The musical duo notably designed together Mmeellooddyy Nneellssoonn in the series titled albums of the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris where the choreographer was associated for three years.
Parity and diversity
The future director intends “to make the National Theater of Bordeaux in Aquitaine a place of transmission and sharing, “a living, committed and joyful theatre”, which accompanies the emergence of new forms and writings, fully open to young people. and to the world around it”, indicates the Ministry of Culture in its press release:
“Accompanied by a community of artists (the ToroToro company, Tamara Al Saadi, Baptiste Amman, the Rivage collective, Rebecca Chaillon, Lionel Dray & Clémence Jeanguillaume, Mohamed el Khatib, Gwenaël Morin, Hatice Ôzer), some of whom are teams established in New Aquitaine, it will strive to bring the theater closer to those who hesitate to enter it, to produce shows and stories where everyone can find their place and create a common story. »
The Ministry of Culture promises “equal programming, open to the French theatrical scene in all its diversity, to dance, to contemporary circus and to projects that can invest in public space”. Fanny de Chaillé also intends to give an important place to childhood and adolescence with the “Kids project” on school time.
By also taking the reins of the Bordeaux-Aquitaine Theater School (Estba), Fanny de Chaillé intends to create a pedagogical college with the aim of “actively involving students in the creative process, helping them to become independent, assert their uniqueness and facilitate their professional integration.
