Paula Abdul, a famous television star, filed a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday (29/12/2023). She accused Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of American Idol and judge on So You Think You Can Dance, of sexual harassment and violence against her.
The lawsuit was filed by the law firm Johnson & Johnson LLP. In it Paula Abdul describes harassment that occurred for some time during the production of American Idol.
“He was subjected to constant ridicule, intimidation, humiliation, and harassment from several of the Defendant’s executives, agents, employees, and/or representatives,” the lawsuit states, quoted by NPR.
The main focus of this lawsuit is the two direct physical attacks that Paula Abdul allegedly suffered from Nigel Lythgoe. One occurred during her tenure as host on American Idol in the early 2000s, where Lythgoe allegedly groped and kissed her in a hotel elevator.
“Abdul attempted to push Lythgoe away from him and told him that his behavior was inappropriate. When the elevator doors to his floor opened, Abdul ran out of the elevator and into his hotel room,” the lawsuit states.
“In tears, Abdul quickly called one of his deputies to tell them about the attack, but ultimately decided not to take action out of fear that Lythgoe would fire him from American Idol.”
The second incident is said to have occurred in 2015 after Paula Abdul agreed to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance.
Previously, he did not reveal these allegations for fear of retaliation or ostracism. The lawsuit also accuses other defendants, including American Idol Productions and Fremantlemedia North America, of being aware of Lythgoe’s behavior and not taking action.
Nigel Lythgoe denies the allegations. He called the accusation a lie that offended him.
Lythgoe promised to fight this slander with all the efforts he had.
