A German vacationer caused considerable property damage while climbing on one of the most famous fountains in Florence. According to the city administration, the 22-year-old climbed the Neptune fountain in the Italian art metropolis on Monday night to have photos taken of himself. A piece of marble broke out of the monument’s chariot. In addition, the hoof of a horse on which the man had jumped was damaged. The damage is estimated at 5000 euros.
With images from the surveillance cameras, the authorities tracked down the vacationer. The Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, published one of the resulting photos on his Twitter page.
He had the young German’s face blacked out, but wrote: “There is no justification for ignorance and vandalism towards cultural heritage.” The vacationer must now reckon with a high fine. The octagonal fountain dates from the 16th century. In 2018 it was extensively restored.
It’s not the first time this summer that artworks have fallen victim to the selfie craze. In early August, a German fitness influencer vandalized a 150-year-old statue in front of a Lake Como villa while trying to hug her for a photo. The statue fell over and shattered. The damage was at least 100,000 euros.
