Famous Goalkeeper’s Disruption Tactics in World Cup Final Criticized: New IFAB Rule and Reactions

Famous for disrupting the French shooters in the World Cup final during the penalty shootout, Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez reacts with levity to the new rule introduced by the IFAB, banning this practice.

The IFAB (International Football Association Board) announced several changes in the rules of football a few weeks ago. The behavior of goalkeepers on penalties is particularly affected, since they are no longer allowed to disturb the shooters, like what Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez did during the penalty shootout of the last World Cup final between France and Argentina (3-3, 2-4 pens).

“I don’t care today, we are already champions of everything”

“I loved the anti-Dibu law, laughs the Albiceleste goalkeeper, interviewed by the radio UrbanaPlay regarding the new rule. They are always looking for an excuse for the shooter to score the goal. I don’t care today, we are already champions of everything. They did it late.”

“I don’t care, I saved what I had to save”, adds Martinez, author of a parade in front of Coman and whose destabilization allowed Argentina to win the penalty shootout and their third Cup of the world. “I knew the boy was going to be nervous, he welcomed in particular the off-target attempt by Tchouaméni. I tried to play him mentally by throwing the ball, talking to him and he shot wide. He has everything fair.”

The law prohibits guards from “unreasonably distracting the shooter”

Law 14 now states that “the goalkeeper may not improperly distract the shooter, for example by delaying the execution of the penalty or by touching the posts, the crossbar or the nets”, adding that “the goalkeeper must take care to respect the play and the adversary while avoiding excessively distracting the shooter”.
