• 21 employees admitted to exercise their retirement rights
• Promote family and intergenerational cohesion
• In the circle of the most successful private companies
A IAMGOLD Essakane, Family’s Day or Family Day, if you prefer, in the language of Molière, is of great importance for mine workers. Indeed, every five years, and for several years, the Management stops to celebrate this day which is intended to be an initiative to reunite the “Essakane family”.
For the 2023 celebration, the administration, employees and members of their families met at the BCEAO Air Center in Ouagadougou. An enchanting setting, far from offices and the squeaking of machines, for a friendly day where it was difficult to distinguish the employer and the employee, as harmony was so essential.
Family’s days have a very specific objective. According to the Human Resources Director of IAMGOLD Essakane, William Ouédraogo, it is regarding “paying tribute to the employees and their families who support them on a daily basis in their professional life project”. Besides this, there is also this desire to “promote family and intergenerational cohesion”, adds William Ouédraogo. Thus, the day covers a tribute to employees admitted to assert their retirement rights; an early Christmas tree for the benefit of workers’ children, as well as board games and training in family budget management.
This year, 21 IAMGOLD Essakane employees from different profiles (metalworker, cook, machine operator, etc.) are being admitted to retirement, following around 15 years of service for the majority. As a sign of recognition for their “good and loyal service” rendered to the company, these new retirees were rewarded with certificates and gifts from Management. “We want to tell you how proud we are of the missions accomplished,” declared the General Director of IAMGOLD Essakane, Tidiane Barry, to the workers heading for retirement. “If our company is one of the most successful in the country, it is because there are women and men who give of themselves,” added the General Director.
On behalf of his newly retired comrades, Théophane Daourou, in turn, expressed the gratitude of all those admitted to retirement for the honor done to them through Family’s Day. But it was an opportunity for the group of young retirees to submit grievances once morest the administration. Théophane Daourou, in particular, wished, on behalf of the group: the recruitment of at least one child of each retiree; prioritizing retirees as much as possible in the choice of service providers and suppliers; coverage for at least one year of health coverage; the payment of at least one year’s salary for all those admitted to retirement with a total of at least ten years of service.
For Thérèse Tiendrebéogo, the Family’s Day initiative must be developed and maintained. “It is unique and involves strengthening and promoting the well-being of employees while allowing spouses and children of employees to know more regarding the company, in particular its values and vision,” she confessed. The Managing Director of IAMGOLD Essakane is also part of this logic of perpetuating the initiative. Tidiane Barry also thinks regarding the institution of Family’s Day every year.
The complaints made by workers admitted to asserting their retirement rights do not seem to fall on deaf ears. In response to these concerns, the CEO of IAMGOLD Essakane indicated that the mine had a whole program that takes into account many of these concerns. “Retirement is a new life and you need to know it with peace of mind. IAMGOLD does and continues to do everything necessary to ensure this peace of mind. Every year, a certain number of workers retire and we know how to look at what is necessary for these people to be peaceful in their new life,” declared Tidiane Barry.
