The family of a resident of CHSLD Saint-Maurice, in Shawinigan, is angry. She claims that the staff failed to inform them regarding the condition of their mother, who had significant bed sores when she was transferred to hospital.
Yves Thibodeau and his brother say their mother was neglected. Significant bed sores and even blisters are found near the 90-year-old lady’s buttocks. These wounds were discovered at the Shawinigan hospital, according to his family.
“Hospital staff were surprised and so was I. We didn’t expect that. I had a lot of anger. These are things that are controllable and avoidable,” said Yves Thibodeau.
Denise Milot, who suffers from cognitive disorders, was transferred last week to Shawinigan hospital to treat a kidney infection. His relatives maintain that the staff of the CHSLD Saint-Maurice would never have informed them of the bed sores.
This is not the first time that the family has denounced the care at the CHSLD Saint-Maurice. In 2021, Yves Thibodeau campaigned for his mother to be able to defecate in a bedpan chair rather than in incontinence pants.
For the moment, the family has contacted a lawyer and is evaluating whether they will file a complaint. “We should not accept this kind of situation. These are wounds that should have been treated and the family should have been warned. For us, as a law firm, it’s negligence,” said Ms.e Francois-David Bernier.
The CIUSSS does not have the same reading of the situation, following having verified the facts and met with the medical team. We reiterate that when a change is observed in the situation of a resident, the next of kin are notified. Monitoring mechanisms also exist to ensure the quality of care and services offered to users.
When it comes to bed sores, teams are trained to act quickly. When they are more complex, we call on a specialist-expert for this type of treatment.
