Family of murdered ‘Rust’ director of photography sues Alec Baldwin

The family of the director of filming for the movie “Rust” who was killed on set sued Hollywood star Alec Baldwin and others Tuesday, accusing them of ignoring a number of safety standards for working on film sets.

The civil lawsuit was filed in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, on behalf of Matthew Hutchins, husband of the late cinematographer Helena Hutchins and their nine-year-old son.

“The suit includes the names of Alec Baldwin and others responsible for on-set safety and whose reckless behavior and cost-cutting led to the tragic death of Halina Hutchins,” attorney Brian Banish said at a news conference in Los Angeles.

Helena Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was wounded by a bullet from a pistol Baldwin was using during rehearsal for a scene prior to filming. Baldwin was a co-producer of this film.

“Any allegation that Alec was careless is completely false,” said Aaron Dyer, a lawyer for Baldwin and other producers of “Rust.”

The movie star says he was told the gun was safe to use.
