Mexican Carlos Hernández, 24, is one of the construction workers presumed dead following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Tuesday, his family told CNN affiliate Univision.

“I wake up, I want to think I’m dreaming, but I wake up and I know that this is reality, that my son was there,” Hernández’s mother, Lucía Zambrano, told Univision, adding that she is asking for help to get a humanitarian visa. to be able to travel to Maryland, be with his son and pressure the search to continue.

Hernández’s girlfriend, Jazmín Álvarez, who lives in Mexico, also spoke with Univisión during the interview and told how she found out regarding the incident.

“I have the GPS tracking on his cell phone, so I looked and it showed he was by the water, but I thought because he was on the bridge, that’s why it showed he was near the water. She didn’t respond,” Alvarez said.

“At 4 in the morning his aunt Mariela had called me. “She told me that they had been in an accident, but I never imagined it was that bad, I thought it was a car accident,” Álvarez added and shared a voice message that Hernández sent him minutes before the bridge collapsed.

“Yes, my love, we just poured the cement and we are just waiting for it to dry,” Hernandez told Alvarez in the voice note.
