Family-Friendly Concert “Sounds of Music” Returns to Latvian National Opera

In the New Hall of the Latvian National Opera, from November 8, a concert production for the whole family “Sounds of Music” based on the world-famous musical by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein will be shown again, the representative of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, Irbe Treile, informed LETA agency.

The role of Maria will be sung by Laura Kancāne or Marlēna Keine, the role of Georg von Trapp by Kalvis Kalniņš or Rihards Miller. Soloists and choral artists of the Latvian National Opera, as well as children’s and youth vocal ensemble “Kolibri” will take part in the concert production.

On the other hand, the Narrator will be the actor Kristians Karelins. Kaspars Ādamsons or Matīss Circenis will stand at the conductor’s desk, the production’s directors are Dace Wolfarte and Agnese Malnača.

Outlining the scenario of the production, Treile says that the young nun Maria is too happy for the convent life, so she becomes the governess of the children of the retired navy captain Georg von Trapp. Maria manages to bring warmth, joie de vivre and, of course, music to the von Trapp house, receiving in return the love of the children and the captain.

Based on the motifs of “Sounds of Music”, the concert production premiered in 2012 was created with the support of the Latvian National Opera Foundation.

Back to the Sounds of Music!

Hold onto your hats, Latvia! In a grand display of musical nostalgia and operatic prowess, the Latvian National Opera is bringing back the family favorite, Sounds of Music. Yes, you heard me right! The beloved musical by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein is set to steal the spotlight again from November 8th in the New Hall of the Latvian National Opera. And let’s be real, you can’t fully appreciate the sound of music without a little extra drama… and not just from the performances on stage!

The role of Maria will be sung by Laura Kancāne or Marlēna Keine, while Kalvis Kalniņš and Rihards Miller will take on the role of Georg von Trapp.

Now, let’s not beat around the bush. Laura Kancāne and Marlēna Keine as Maria? It’s almost as if they’ve flipped a coin, and either way, we’re in for a treat! Meanwhile, the formidable Kalvis Kalniņš or the ever-charismatic Rihards Miller will portray the grumpy yet loveable Navy captain. It’s a bit like putting a cat in a swimming pool—sure, it’ll struggle at first, but with a little help, it might just turn into something spectacular! And who could forget the charming vocal ensemble Kolibri? A perfect addition to stir up the collective heartstrings of the audience.

The Narrator will be none other than actor Kristians Karelins, while Kaspars Ādamsons or Matīss Circenis will control the chaos at the conductor’s podium.

Now, if you’re wondering, “Who is this Kristians Karelins?” let’s just say he’s the guy who whispers sweet nothings into the microphones, guiding us through the tumultuous joyride that is the von Trapp family. And have you seen these conductors? They might just conduct the music and a flash mob simultaneously! Just imagine trying to keep the audience in sync with a baton! It’s like herding cats, but I digress.

Maria, being the little ball of sunshine she is, gets tired of being cooped up in the monastery and takes on the daunting task of becoming a governess for the widowed Captain von Trapp’s children. Think Julie Andrews, but with perhaps slightly less magic, and a whole lot more chaos!

The grand production, which first premiered back in 2012, is a dazzling representation of how a life full of song (and a bit of disobedience) can transform the mundane into the extraordinary! Maria comes in like a whirlwind, bringing not just music, but a renewed sense of joy to the gloomy von Trapp household—although I’m pretty sure the kids did more screeching than singing for the first few days. But hey, life is a process, and if we’ve learned anything from musicals like this, it’s that these moments of disarray only lead to magnificent crescendos.

So, my unsuspecting audience, if you happen to find yourself in Latvia this November, do yourself a favor and grab a ticket! Because let’s be honest—when was the last time you got lost in the essence of ‘do-re-mi’ while desperately fighting the urge to sing along loudly and off-key?

As a result, she takes on the position of governess for the seven children of the widowed Georg von Trapp. With her infectious spirit, Maria infuses the von Trapp residence with warmth, joy, and of course, music, ultimately winning the hearts of both the children and their father.
