The 84-year-old made his way into the forest early on Sunday morning. It is not known when and how exactly the accident happened. Shortly before noon, a 48-year-old who had been hiking with his family found him lying helpless next to the hiking trail. The pensioner was so exhausted that he could no longer get up on his own.

The 48-year-old ran to the nearest house to start the rescue chain while the other family members took care of the 84-year-old. A mountain rescue doctor climbed up to the scene of the accident and was able to stabilize the 84-year-old to such an extent that he was able to descend 100 meters to the ravine on his own. From there, the Gmunden mountain rescue service bus took him to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Gmunden for a check-up.
