Family Farming Fairs Raised More Than USD 2,000,000 in the First Half of the Year

Asuncion, IP Agency.- A total of 2,052,271 dollars (G.15,536,523,000) were raised by small producers through 1,133 “Fairs for Family Farming”, promoted by the government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock at the national level. This directly benefited 6,040 small rural families grouped in 500 organizations.

The head of MAG, Carlos Giménez, stressed that the desire of President Santiago Peña’s government is for each family to become a productive family unit with an income, through the Family Agriculture Fairs that help many rural families get out of poverty.

The MAG reported that the products with the highest demand at the fairs are Paraguay cheese, sold for a total of Gs. 3,262,669,830; pork/goat/sheep meat, for Gs. 2,951,939,370; chicken/duck meat, sold for Gs. 1,398,287,070, in addition to corn flour/starch, sold for Gs. 776,826,150; eggs Gs. 621,460,920 and orchids, whose sales reached Gs. 1,708,884,000. Other products were sold for a total of Gs. 4,816,455,660.

Minister Giménez expressed his gratitude to the technicians, institutions and organizations that support the Family Farming Fairs, as well as to the members of the press. He said that they cooperate in the dissemination of the Fairs that are displayed, reaching people and enabling these families to obtain more than Gs. 15,000 million.

He stressed that according to the latest census, more than 250,000 farmers are rural producers working in agriculture, and the government wishes to support them.

He also stressed that fairs are a motivation for many young people to return from the cities, because they see a business opportunity.

He stressed that with the School Food Law coming into effect very soon, next year will be a great challenge to produce and ensure that the food that children will consume in schools comes from Family Farming.

The head of the MAG, in the presentation made within the framework of Expo 2024, also pointed out that the fairs help many families to get out of poverty, and following losing confidence, they start producing once more.

At another point, he said that it is the result of a participatory diagnostic work, in which they listened to all the organizations, with a result that today serves us very well, to respond to the needs of our people, he added.

Giménez said at another time that the MAG has a complex job, which is not easy, because it is a ministry that was poorly managed, misused and manipulated for a long time by external political factors, with people who did not work. He added that this is what happened with Family Agriculture, with people who worked and who never received any benefits.

He stressed that the MAG also aims at the independence of the organizations, to which the government will deliver an important contribution tomorrow in Vaquería, with agricultural machinery and implements, he said. He pointed out that the objective is that when they have more experience they can do their business directly, guarantee the continuous supply of products and that supermarkets can look to Family Agriculture. “That is the desire that we have as MAG,” he added.
