Families of Moroccans detained in Myanmar are heading to protest in Rabat to demand the release of their children.

The families of Moroccans detained in Myanmar announced the organization of a protest in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, and in front of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, on Thursday, May 16, 2024, to demand the liberation of their children and to reveal their unknown fate.

The families added that they will also hold a press conference in Rabat at the headquarters of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, during the same day, to introduce this file and reveal its latest developments.

The families of victims of human trafficking in Myanmar criticized what they called the “incomprehensible silence” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation for Moroccans residing abroad, calling on the Moroccan authorities to intervene urgently in order to rescue the detained Moroccans by liberating them and returning them to the homeland.

In a statement on the matter, the Committee of Families of Victims of Human Trafficking in Myanmar criticized “the negative interaction and unjustified indifference of the Moroccan Embassy in Thailand with the file, despite complaints and repeated communications from the families,” while holding “the People’s Republic of China directly responsible, considering the gangs that are detaining their children and exploiting them in fraud.” The emails are all of Chinese nationality.”

In addition, the families of the detainees also held the Moroccan embassy in Thailand “responsible for not responding to the families and not providing any service to the released or detainees, and for not interacting with international humanitarian organizations wishing to coordinate with them to liberate Moroccan detainees.”

In the same statement, the families of Moroccan detainees called on the Moroccan government to interact effectively with the file of Myanmar detainees, which affects the lives of Moroccan male and female citizens and the image of Morocco and Moroccans, praising the rapid positive response of the security and judicial authorities to the families and their complaints.
