The city of Bakhmut, for months a symbol of Russia’s failure in Ukraine, has fallen. At almost the same time, the Russian region of Belgorod was attacked. A “new dimension” has thus been reached, says military expert Major Albin Rentenberger. All sides seem very nervous, especially among the Russian fighters, their nerves are on edge.
The pro-Russian Wagner mercenaries in particular paid a high price in blood for the Pyrrhic victory in Bakhmut. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has recently directed harsh tirades of abuse against the Moscow war bureaucrats. Despite the success in Bakhmut, which is important for their own propaganda, nerves in the Russian ranks are on edge.
In addition, the Ukrainian counter-offensive is likely to be imminent.
