Fall in prices and call for their dollarization

Fuel prices fell yesterday in Lebanon following a rebound of the Lebanese pound once morest the dollar on the parallel market, while the price for 20 liters of 95 octane gasoline reached the 700,000 LL mark on Tuesday. .

Here are the new fuel prices published by the Ministry of Energy and Water:

• 20 liters of gasoline at 95 octane: LL 653,000 (- LL 47,000);

• 20 liters of gasoline at 98 octane: 669,000 LL (- 48,000 LL);

• 20 liters of diesel (for vehicles): LBP 789,000 (- LBP 59,000);

• Gas cylinder: 375,000 LL (- 26,000 LL);

• The price per kiloliter of fuel oil (for generators in particular), priced in dollars, has not been modified and still amounts to 1,018 dollars, plus a transport supplement of 685,000 LL per kilolitre.

Separately, spokesman for petrol station owners Georges Brax said in a statement yesterday that petrol stations should be allowed to price fuel in dollars “to avoid confusion caused by the fluctuation” of the Lebanese pound. For him, the prices announced yesterday “are unacceptable”, denouncing a difference between the exchange rate at which the fuel prices were calculated – 36,650 LL for one dollar – and that at which the importers bought the fuels, which, according to him “exceeded 38,100 LL”. A situation caused by a rebound in the Lebanese pound recorded on the parallel market on Tuesday, going from 39,000 LL to less than 38,000 LL. Georges Brax further decried the “great losses that will be suffered by the stations, exceeding 25,000 LL” for each 20 liters of gasoline because of this discrepancy.
