Although the days are getting colder, they offer us magnificent shows. The beautiful fall colors are beginning to appear. A little ahead of other years.
Flamboyant red, golden yellow and bronze reflections: the colors of autumn are here and even a little earlier this year.
“The lack of water that accumulates in the soil creates for the tree what is called water stressexplains Philippe Janssens, pruner. The tree can no longer sweat enough to cool the leaves which are exposed to heat waves”.
Trees protect themselves and prepare to face winter. Due to the drought, their leaves fall faster.
“The tree will self-regulate to actually perhaps make its leaves fall earlier but still continue to feed its trunk, its carpenters, its branches”adds the specialist.
Simon Janssens is a pruner and started his work earlier this year. He confirms it: the trees have suffered so much from the strong heat that some will be dead in the spring.
“What is likely to happen is that if during the fall, the leaves will fall. Since this is the case for all trees (except conifers), we will not necessarily realize that They have a problem. It’s only in the spring, when the leaves will resume, that some trees will resume normally, but others will no longer be the case, they may not have managed to survive.”he explains.
According to these pruners, we will have to think of different tree species from now on in Belgium, such as pine, hazel, apple or eucalyptus, for example.
