INDONESIAN men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto are using the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a lesson for facing the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Because at that time, Fajar/Rian participated as a sparring team for Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan who were undergoing a training camp in Kumamoto.

“At the Tokyo Olympics, we were a sparring team, at that time we saw the preparations of The Minions and The Daddies,” said Rian in his statement, (18/7).

“We learned from there so now we at least have an idea of what the training camp is like. It doesn’t feel much different so we know how to manage our focus moreover since it’s almost time (for the Olympics),” continued Rian.

Fajar/Rian also said that during the four days in Chambly for training camp, their condition was quite good.

“Thank God, everything is fine. Training is going smoothly. Here, we just have to maintain our performance and stay focused. The training menu is more or less the same as in Jakarta, but here we just have to maintain it, just do the finishing touches,” said Rian.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles coach Aryono emphasized the important role of sparring and mentors in this training camp. Both elements are the key to Fajar/Rian’s training running smoothly and according to needs.

“The sparring athletes and mentors in the men’s doubles play an important role in the smooth running of Fajar/Rian’s training at this training camp,” said Aryono.

“I brought Fikri, Bagas and Daniel for Fajar/Rian’s training needs. Fikri plays up front while Bagas and Daniel are strong at the back. This is good for defensive training. The mentors are Candra (Wijaya) and Hendra (Setiawan), besides being able to share experiences because they are Olympic gold medal winners, both are also ready to go down to the field to provide drilling or game training,” explained Aryono.

Aryono added that the Olympics is a mental battle so focus is the most important thing.

“The Olympics is a competition where anything can happen. So Fajar/Rian must really prepare their mentality and thoughts, not just technique or physicality. Keep thinking positively, optimistically and confidently,” he concluded.
