Trade labeled Fairtrade, a global fair trade organization, is gaining market share in Belgium. Belgians have never bought so many fair trade products as in 2022, write Le Soir and De Standaard on Monday.
Last year, the total market value of Fairtrade products in Belgium increased by 20% compared to 2021 – and by 85% over five years -, for a total of 312 million euros. A rise tempered half by inflation. The Fairtrade Premium paid to producers also increased by 17.6%. “It’s an excellent result”, according to the CEO of Fairtrade Belgium, Philippe Weiler.
The Fairtrade label is thus becoming increasingly popular in supermarkets: 20% of all chocolate sold in Belgium is Fairtrade, the same goes for bananas.
The market value of fair trade products, however, is still only 1% of the Belgian retail sector, which amounted to 30.8 billion euros in 2022 according to the knowledge platform Gondola Academy.
