Fairphone is a smartphone company that makes sustainable phones with the aim of reducing their environmental footprint. Therefore, to ensure the durability of its devices, it provides extended software support. So, models released several years ago are getting a huge software leap.
This is the case with the Fairphone 3 and the Fairphone 3 Plus that are now receiving Android 13 through a beta update. The phones were released in 2019 and 2020 and come with Android 9 and Android 10 respectively.
According to the company, all users will receive the Android 13 update by the end of June. The update is turbo if it is highlighted that the devices were previously with Android 11. The idea of sustainability here is to guarantee support for as long as possible.
In a press release, Fairphone says it is sticking with these devices despite the vendor of its chipsets ending support. In that case, the handsets came with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 632 SoC. The Fairphone team is apparently tasked with providing software support for both phones as they “evaluate the feasibility of updating the device to Android 13”.
Android 13 updates phones with some of the best Android phones out there as the update continues to gain momentum among Android devices. Furthermore, these phones will continue to receive support until August 2024, giving them a good four to five year lifespan. The company’s goal is to extend support for these phones through 2026.
According to Fairphone’s head of software longevity Agnes Crepet, their investment is not just in new customers, but existing ones who have purchased the device. The longest-lived example is the Fairphone 2, released in 2015, which recently received its last official update.
