The Wholesale Market Administrator (AMM), the operator of the interconnected national electricity system, confirmed that on Friday, August 2, a blackout occurred at around 11:38 a.m. due to an event (fault) that occurred at the Guatemala Sur substation, leaving approximately 70 megawatts of load without service.
The agency explained that the corresponding maneuvers were carried out to reestablish the transmission of electricity, which concluded at 12:11 p.m., with which most of the disconnected load was restored.
However, he said that due to remote control problems presented by other agents, the reconnection of some load circuits was delayed and at 12:40 hours the reconnection of 19.8 MW was still pending.
The blackouts were reported in zones 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19 and 21. In addition, the Guatemalan Electric Company (EEGSA) reported at 2:10 p.m. that most sectors were energized, but that Mixco Norte, some areas of Petapa and Reformita, San Lucas, Santa María Cauqué, Santo Domingo Xenacoj and Sumpango were still affected.
The company said power was fully restored at 3:05 p.m.
The National Electrification Institute (INDE) indicated separately that the fault occurred in a transformer at the Guate Sur substation, owned by the entity, and that another part of the substation had to be isolated to verify it. It added that at 4 p.m., personnel from the institution were still working on changing the transformer.
The blackout also left thousands of traffic lights out of service in the affected areas of the capital and the Municipal Fire Department reported that several people were trapped in an elevator in a building in Zone 9.
