“We believe transforming St Andrew’s…into a bustling food hall and cultural space will not only attract tourists but also enhance the local community’s experience,” explains Laura McCarthy, from Fáilte Ireland. This ambitious project aims to create a dynamic space that celebrates the best of local and Irish produce, offering a unique dining experience alongside cultural events and activities.
The food hall is expected to create between 30 and 40 full-time and part-time jobs, injecting much-needed economic life into the community. “In order to generate and sustain further economic opportunity and economic development we need to create iconic food and drink experiences – the proposed change of use and redevelopment of St Andrew’s would be the embodiment of that vision,” asserts McCarthy.
David Mulcahy, of David Mulcahy Planning Consultants, highlights the growing popularity of food halls in European cities. He believes the project will “bring life back to this vacant building which is one of the most prominent buildings in the city.”
This isn’t the first time plans for a food hall at St Andrew’s have been explored. In 2019, the Swords-based Wright Group held planning permission for a similar project, but the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately led to it being shelved. Fáilte Ireland is now taking the helm, persistent to realize this vision and establish St Andrew’s Church as a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists.
