Faculty of Medicine at University of Zulia: Management Report 2019-2023 and COVID-19’s Impact

The dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zulia, Dr. Sergio Osorio Morales, called the Faculty Assembly this Monday, October 30, to present the management report corresponding to the period 2019 – 2023.

He explained that this period was directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and this generated a total change in processes. Given this, they used strategic planning to, for example, implement the use of information technologies as a tool inherent to the Faculty.

“During this period, human talent was the most valuable capital of the Faculty of Medicine and we worked to create a relationship of inclusion with our students,” said the dean.

Currently, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zulia has 4,207 students distributed in the four Schools: nursing (360), nutrition and dietetics (465), bioanalysis (560) and medicine (2822). Each year it graduates more than 1,000 health sciences professionals in undergraduate and graduate degrees.

During this period, 54 postgraduate programs were created, some of them in conjunction with the Venezuelan Social Security Institute (IVSS), reaching a greater number of locations in Zulia, including Cabimas and Ciudad Ojeda.

Doctorates in medical sciences and health sciences became school programs. The Program for Higher Nursing Technicians (PETSE) was projected. In addition, extension programs such as courses and diplomas and the promotion of inter-institutional agreements for the formulation and execution of research projects were strengthened.

Regarding infrastructure, he commented that more than 30 spaces were reconditioned and enabled between classrooms, teachers’ cubicles, study spaces and bathrooms in the faculty of medicine and the science and health building, the most emblematic being Classroom 1 with a capacity of almost 230 students. The auditoriums were also completely recovered: Dr. Jesús María Ludovic, Dr. Solano Nava and Dr. Antonio Borjas Romero.

The restoration work included research institutes, laboratories, administrative areas, student centers, as well as strengthening postgraduate teaching units in the hospitals: General del Sur, Chiquinquirá, Universitario, Dr. Adolfo Pons and Central.

Along with the modernization of the spaces, high-quality internet was installed in the Faculty of Medicine in order to solve the undeniable need for this service for the communication of the university community and the academic training of the students.

Regarding health outreach, 8 days of community assistance in the region were contributed with more than 4,050 people benefiting.

To achieve the objectives, the dean commented that they reached agreements on payment modalities, security and execution of continuing education programs, as well as the automation of procedures via the web, reformulation of the curricula of nursing, nutrition and dietetics careers, bioanalysis and medicine. They also created agreements with the Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo and the Government of Zulia.

A relevant aspect of the management was the recognition in life of the members of the university community. In formal ceremonies, medals and buttons of honor for merit were awarded to honorary doctors, outstanding health professionals, teachers and personalities of regional and national relevance. As well as awards for research.

To conclude the management report, the dean, Dr. Sergio Osorio Morales, assured:

“Reengineering added to strategic planning were the key for the Faculty of Medicine to be considered the model faculty of the University of Zulia and even other universities in the country. We are an open-door faculty, which provides quality training, and whose operation is even superior to that before the pandemic,” said the dean.
