Facilitation of customs procedures and ensuring good reception at border posts

ALGIERS- Finance Minister Laaziz Faid stressed, Tuesday in Algiers, the need to facilitate customs procedures and ensure the good reception of travelers at border posts, noting that the new computer system in progress to digitize customs activities will bring more facilitation to the majority of customs transactions.

This took place during an inspection visit by the Minister to the services of the General Directorate of Customs at Houari Boumediene airport in the presence of the director general of this body, Noureddine Khaldi.

During an inspection tour of the airport’s west terminal, which is the main entry and exit point for travelers and goods, Mr. Faid called on all services to “cooperate with Customs services in within the framework of a shared approach with a view to facilitating and rationalizing customs procedures”.

The Minister noted the importance of a warm welcome and the speed of customs transaction services in order to guarantee “the smooth running” of the summer season.

The Minister who listened to explanations on the currency declaration office at the airport, Mr. Faid stressed the importance of the fight once morest crimes related to foreign exchange.

The minister noted that the new computer system underway to digitize the majority of customs activities “should bring regarding a revolution in the customs sector in the months to come”.

Mr. Faid also inquired regarding certain operations carried out by the Customs services this week at the airport, including the seizure of 1,500 boxes of pharmaceutical products in the suitcases of a traveler arriving from Istanbul airport (Turkey) .

The Customs Services also succeeded in seizing 800 boxes of parapharmaceutical products in the luggage of a traveler coming from Dubai (United Arab Emirates), as well as other operations resulting in the seizure of considerable quantities of cosmetics, perfumes, cell phones, cigarettes, baby milk and subsidized products (powdered milk).

The list of items seized also includes surveillance cameras, professional drones, a metal detector, fishing guns, homemade guns and handcuffs.

In this context, the Minister took the opportunity to salute “the professionalism and commitment of customs officers”, in that they contribute to the preservation of the country’s economic interests and the protection of citizens vis-à-vis once morest contraband products.

At the end of the visit, Mr. Faid visited the cargo area of ​​the airport, where he inquired regarding the working conditions at the level of this service, affirming the taking of “urgent measures” to change its location and ensure thus the best conditions for the customs services to accomplish their missions.

For his part, Mr. Khelladi insisted, in a statement to the press, on the sidelines of the visit, on the full availability of all executives for the well-being of travelers, noting that the new computer system makes it easier to all plans, and plays an important role in the preservation of the property of the public treasury.
