On the twelfth day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the situation has changed little on the ground. Moscow’s forces are advancing at certain points, but the Ukrainian army is only slowly giving ground, to the great pride of the country’s newspapers.
In extremely difficult conditions, the Ukrainian media are trying to continue to inform their audiences of the ongoing fighting, real-time air alerts and the departure of refugees. According to the Ukrainian strategic analysis site Liveuamap.com, a senior US defense official claimed that Russian President Vladimir “Putin hired almost 100 % of his combat abilities [prépositionnées] and Ukraine ”. What’s more, “Russia fired more than 625 missiles, mostly short and medium range, and cruise missiles”.
On the Ukrainian side, reports on its website the weekly Dzerkalo Tyjnia, “the United States and NATO countries sent to Ukraine 17 000 anti-tank missiles and 2 000 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. In all, 14 countries are already providing military aid to Kyiv”. A large part of the US aid package, amounting to $350 million, “was delivered within a week of the attack”.
Western arms deliveries indeed seem to be continuing at a steady pace, as confirmed by Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, quoted by Oukraïnska Pravda. “I won’t comment on arms deliveries, but significant progress has been made” in this area, he says. It also specifies:
Due to the heavy losses suffered by the enemy, the intensity of military operations has temporarily decreased.”
“The Russian occupiers are trying to regroup and concentrate resources to launch new waves of attacks. First on Kiev, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv”. But, assures the minister, “we don’t let our guard down” and “surprises await the enemy”.
