Faced with inflation, the French are more and more interested in energy

Teréga, in partnership with Harris Interactive, unveils the 2023 barometer of French people’s perception of energy. And faced with inflation, it is clear that the French are more and more interested in the subject and form an opinion.

Faced with the upcoming energy challenges and the persistent geopolitical context, the French are increasingly worried about their energy bill. This has a consequence: they are increasingly interested in energy issues. Here is one of the conclusions of the barometer 2023 dedicated to the French people’s perception of energy, produced by Teréga, one of the two operators of the gas transport network in France, in partnership with Harris Interactive.

Thus, according to the survey carried out online from February 17 to 23, 2023 among 1,025 French people representative of the French population aged 18 and over, 77% of French people say they are interested in energy issues, compared to 65% in May 2021. And now, nearly 60% of them say they are “well informed” about these topics, compared to 53% in 2021.

An opinion on the different energy sources

The French thus develop their own opinion on the different sources of energy. The barometer highlights four blocks of opinion. The first includes solar and hydraulic energy with respectively 84% and 77% positive opinion. Next are natural gas, wind energy and geothermal energy with a good opinion, between 58 and 68%. Then, nearly one in two French people say they also have a good opinion of nuclear energy (57%) and biomethane (45%). Finally, whether it be oil, fuel oil or coal, favorable opinions do not exceed 25%.

“The barometer shows us that in some respects we have forms of stability in the view of opinion that can be taken with regard to the different forms of energy, reacts Jean-Daniel Lévy, deputy director of Harris Interactive. The major difference is the look with regard to nuclear energy. » Favorable opinions regarding nuclear energy have in fact increased by 6 points this year.

French people increasingly critical

However, in the context of inflation, 68% of respondents believe that France is still not doing enough to guarantee prices accessible to individuals, despite the implementation of the price shield. “The state is identified as an energy actor in its own right and it is criticized for its current and past choices, observes Jean-Daniel Lévy. Energy is becoming a political issue. »

In particular, between half and two thirds of French people believe that France is not doing enough to develop energy research or to encourage energy renovation. Our compatriots do not show more benevolence when it comes to judging the national policy for the development of renewable energies or the development of the offer of low-polluting public transport.

In the current context, 92% of French people claim to monitor their energy consumption for financial reasons, 77% for environmental reasons. And 73% mention the combination of these two justifications. “The end of the world – end of the month opposition is not always justified in the eyes of our compatriots” raises Jean-Daniel Lévy. The French in particular monitor their consumption using the Linky meter, and once again encourage the use of their devices during off-peak hours when possible.
