Facebook’s own content monitoring, the Oversight Board, has begun work

Social networking site Facebook has launched an Oversight Board set up to monitor its content and review whether controversial content should be removed or kept on the website.

Facebook formed an independent board in May this year, which has been named the Oversight Board, and initially selected 20 members from different countries.

Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) chief and social activist Nighat Dad from Pakistan has also been included in the board.

In addition to them, Yemeni human rights activist, journalist and Nobel laureate Tawakal Kirmani, former Prime Minister of Denmark, Helle Thorning Skmedt, former US Federal Court judge Michael McNail, former editor of the British newspaper The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger are on the board. And 20 politicians, lawyers, academics, writers, journalists and human rights activists from different countries of the world including Colombian educationist Catalina Botero.

The said board is being called the Supreme Court of Facebook, this board will work like a court and it will be necessary for Facebook to accept its decisions.

This board will independently monitor the content published on Facebook within the rules and regulations and will decide what content is published on Facebook and what content is blocked.

The board will also make decisions regarding the publication of content on Instagram, including Facebook, and provide Facebook with recommendations and a list of what content can and cannot be blocked.

Catalina Botero Merino, co-chair of the Oversight Board, said her body is now ready to review applications, but clarified that her team will not be able to review every complaint.

According to Catalina Botero Merino, due to the high number of complaints and requests, the Oversight Board will review only important requests and will look at requests that involve a large number of customers, countries or regions.

According to him, the board will specifically hear such requests on an urgent basis where a large number of people will be affected by the issue of removal or publication of a material.
