On the one hand, Apple Watch has become more independent, but on the other hand, well-known apps have gradually removed their native versions of watchOS. According to a report by MacRumors, Meta sent a notice to its Facebook Messenger users, saying that they will stop using the Apple Watch client at the end of this month, that is, May 31. For users, the Apple Watch can still receive push content from the iPhone’s Messenger app, but they can no longer initiate conversations directly on the watch. Meta did not explain why, saying only that users can continue to use Messenger through the iPhone, desktop and web versions.

Meta launched the native Facebook Messenger app on Apple Watch in 2015, which can input handwritten text, send voice, emoji and preset responses, but today’s communication content formats are far richer than these, such as stickers, shared posts, etc. So the native Messenger app on the Apple Watch becomes useless. At the same time, Meta has also drastically reduced costs, layoffs, and changed product direction, so today may be just one of the affected products.

For Apple, the loss of another well-known app in the watchOS ecosystem must be a blow. However, there is news that the next version of watchOS 10 will focus on gadgets, allowing users to easily see information at a glance, so the type of Messenger that needs to be operated slowly on a small screen may not be appropriate.
