Facebook fined for illegal interest

A German court has imposed a 2 million euro fine on Facebook, the leading social networking site, for non-transparency in dealing with hateful content.

According to the report of the French news agency ‘AFP’, under the law implemented from January 1, 2018, companies such as Twitter and Facebook have 24 hours to remove posts that violate German law.

Also, unwanted content, which is difficult to categorize, must be removed within 7 days of being reported.

Under the law, social media companies that do not meet these conditions can face fines of up to 50 million euros ($60 million).

Also, online companies are required to publish a report every 6 months on the measures taken against hateful content.

In the decision issued by the German court, Facebook was fined 2.26 million dollars, but Facebook can file an appeal against this decision.

Facebook was fined for failing to respond to complaints from users between January and June 2018.

The court said in a statement that ‘the report covers only a fraction of consumer complaints on illegal content’.

It also examined how Facebook offers its own formal procedures and a channel, which the court described as ‘extremely confidential’, for filing complaints about content that is offensive under German law.

However, complaints filed through other channels are included in the published report, while content reported under Facebook’s procedures is not.

The Court is of the opinion that the number of complaints received from widely recognized procedures is considerable, therefore what is presented in the report is incomplete.

According to the report, Facebook had said in the report published during January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2018 that 1,704 posts were removed on the complaints of 886 users, of which 326 were reported by 218 people. Posts deleted or blocked.

Apart from this, during the said period, YouTube received complaints against 2 lakh 15 thousand videos, of which 58 thousand were deleted, while Twitter received 2 lakh 65 thousand complaints, of which 29 thousand tweets were deleted.
