Faced with American giants, France Télévisions continues to expand its platform

France Télévisions’ record audiences this summer thanks to the Paris Olympic Games also benefited its free streaming platform, france.tv, which reached a record level of 40.7 million unique visitors in August. This performance will be difficult to repeat, but the public group naturally hopes to ride this trend. One way to do this is to continue to strengthen its online offering.

After the shift towards interactivity already taken in view of the Olympic Games, france.tv is thus initiating a new major development. It will soon distribute certain content from other public audiovisual groups: Arte, the Institut National Audiovisuel, the Chaîne parlementaire (LCP) and Public Sénat.

Free Carrefour for all

“The hegemony of American platforms is not inevitable,” said Delphine Ernotte, CEO of the public group, at the back-to-school press conference on Wednesday. To counter YouTube, Netflix and the like, France.tv will become “an anchor and convergence point” for the best of Arte’s offering, as well as a “collection of content” from INA, but also some programs from LCP and Public Sénat.

This development will take place during the fall, announced the leader, whose mandate ends in 2025. Negotiations are also underway with Radio France which could result in integrating some of the content of the group led by Sibyle Veil.

The aim is to give more visibility to content, by making france.tv the free crossroads that brings together the offers of public service media in the most comprehensive way possible. At the same time, the streaming platforms of each of these groups will continue to live their own lives, including Arte.tv. Available in six languages, the streaming service of the Franco-German channel has become in recent years the most accomplished pan-European alternative to Netflix in terms of fiction and documentaries.

More than 500 films per year

In addition, france.tv will continue to expand its cinema offering, with the goal of making 500 films available per year. As for the virtual fanzone created for the Games on France.tv, this type of interactive solution will be reissued for major events. And to expand Slash, its brand aimed at young people, france.tv will begin broadcasting e-sports in September with the famous game “League of Legends”.

The platform will also feature a new entertainment talk show with streamer ZeratoR. The show will also be available on Twitch. While TF1 and M6 overhauled their streaming services last season, for now France Télévisions is opting for a more gradual approach to evolving its platform. But a new design and a more in-depth transformation of france.tv are expected to take place in early 2025.

The France 2 news will last almost an hour

It is a choice “undoubtedly going against the grain of an era of shortcuts,” acknowledged Delphine Ernotte, CEO of France Télévisions. The public group is betting on extending its flagship news edition. Still hosted by Anne-Sophie Lapix during the week and Laurent Delahousse from Friday to Sunday, the 8 p.m. news on France 2 will be extended. Including the Météo Climat, the evening news slot will last nearly an hour, compared to just under 40 minutes currently. Faced with the phenomenon of “infobesity,” this extended format will allow for debate and analysis to be prioritized by allowing for longer field reporting formats, explained Alexandre Kara, the news director. To give more space to the news at 8 p.m., the daily soap opera “Un si grand soleil” will now be broadcast on France 3.
